What our feature has to say about himself!:

My name is Carlos Contreras. I have been twice recognized as a national champion performance poet. These days, I live and work in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I work as a local educator, who leads writing workshops in the adult jail facility at the Gordon Bernell Charter School, while at the same time teaching all levels of high school English. One of the things that I love about who I work with and for, is that those I work with see the passion I have for helping our community, and so yearly I am given time off to also provide services to the National Hispanic Cultural Center. At the NHCC I play host to the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Voces program, a writing institute for youth. It is experiences like that of teaching at such a young age, and working at the NHCC with the Voces program, that garnered me the honor of being awarded a 2012 Bravos Award, as an “Emerging Creative.” I dream of a world in which I can support myself solely by way of my art, until then I will continue to work at nurturing and honing my craft.

Tucson Youth Poetry Slam, January 2014- Review

041

We have officially rung in the New Year with buckets and buckets of poetry!

On January 18th, we gathered at the lovely Bentley’s House of Coffee and Tea for the first slam of the year. We had 13 competing poets grace the stage, 7 of which were first timers! (woop woop!)  We were also lucky to have our very own DJ Queue come back, with even more great beats– and this time, they came from vinyls!

This month, our feature was Aaron Johnson, the owner of Lawn Gnome Books and Publishing in Phoenix, a proud lefthander, and a harmonica player– who can beatbox at the same time! During the workshop, Aaron showed us how to write a “Million Dollar Haiku” and Fishbowl Poetry, and also shared some tips on how we can beatbox. During his feature performance, Aaron shared beautiful yet hysterical love and coming-of-age poems, and then came back in the second round to perform an extremely moving poem on Alzheimer’s.

As the winner of last month’s slam, Lydia H. was able to come right before Round 3 and read a new poem! You can see it here.

This was a great way to start off the year, and we are so lucky to have the support we do! As always, special thanks to Bentley’s for staying up late for us, as well as our volunteer time and score keepers, and videographers! Shouts out to our lovely hosts Araceli and Alexia, as well as our wonderful audience!

Congratultions to this month’s winners!

Overall slam:

1. Jose M.
2. Estefania G.
3. Maria G.

First timers’ slam:

Aaron Johnson, an Arizona slam legend will be our amazing feature for this month as our youth compete! Our spotlight poet will be the one and only Lydia H., who won our December slam with grace! Back by popular demand, we will also be bringing back our DJ to fill the room with delicious vibes, DJ Queue! Get excited; it’s all going down this Saturday!

Aaron Hopkins-Johnson likes pinball machines, shortbread cookies, graphic novels, and skateboard competitions. However, Aaron is most likely to found at a poetry slam or rock show, drinking coffee. In 2012, Aaron opened Lawn Gnome Publishing, a used bookstore and publishing house located in the heart of downtown Phoenix. As a young teen, he worked at Arby’s. It was here that he saw a lefthander chop off his thumb in a roast beef slicer. Being a lefty too, Aaron was permanently scarred for life and began writing and performing poetry.

Led by Leon de la Rosa!

POETRY SLAM: 7:00-10:00pm, signup at 6:30
Hosted by Zack T. & Araceli M.!

And for the first time this is going to be a
TECHNOLOGY SLAM!

For the first time, you will be able to use a prop – a video projection screen!
So as you spit your poem, any Youtube video or image of your choice can be playing in the background (with or without audio)! It can be themed to your poem or maybe you want to rap to a beat, this is your chance! There can be Youtube video of special effects or audio or even flying llamas in the background! It doesn’t have to be just a video, you can use a still picture or a slideshow – anything goes!

Make sure you are using video links from Youtube! If you want to use your own video or slideshow, make sure it is uploaded on Youtube first, then send the links to Araceli at amontano@tucsonyouthpoetryslam.org  or Leon at delarosacarrillo@email.arizona.edu so we can download them and have em’ on hand before the slam! When you email her, send the link from the video and your name, so we know which video to pull up once your name is called!

The video will start when you start reading (so don’t expect us to start the video at .56 seconds) and will end at 3 minutes and 10 seconds! You will receive an extra .5 points to your score for any round that you use a video!
